چکیده

We consider the question of whether P(ω) is a subalgebra whenever it is a quotient of a Boolean algebra by a countably generated ideal. This question was raised privately by Murray Bell. We obtain two partial answers under the open coloring axiom. Topologically our first result is that if a zerodimensional compact space has a zero-set mapping onto βN , then it has a regular closed zero-set mapping onto βN . The second result is that if the compact space has density at most ω1, then it will map onto βN if it contains a zero-set that maps onto βN .

An Improper Arithmetically Closed Borel Subalgebra of P(ω) mod FIN

We show the existence of a subalgebra A ⊆ P(ω) that satisfies the following three conditions: • A is Borel (when P(ω) is identified with 2). • A is arithmetically closed (i.e., A is closed under the Turing jump, and Turing reducibility). • The forcing notion (A,⊆) modulo the ideal FIN of finite sets collapses the continuum to א0.

1 5 D ec 1 99 7 REGULAR SUBALGEBRAS OF COMPLETE BOOLEAN ALGEBRAS

There is shown that there exists a complete, atomless, σ-centered Boolean algebra, which does not contain any regular countable subalgebra if and only if there exist a nowhere dense ultrafilter. Therefore the existence of such algebras is undecidable in ZFC. A subalgebra B of a Boolean algebra A is called regular whenever for every X ⊆ B, supB X = 1 implies supA X = 1; see e.g. Heindorf and Sha...

On Mode Reducts of Semimodules

Modes are idempotent and entropic algebras. More precisely, an algebra (A,Ω) of type τ : Ω −→ Z is called a mode if it is idempotent and entropic, i.e. each singleton in A is a subalgebra and each operation ω ∈ Ω is actually a homomorphism from an appropriate power of the algebra. Both properties can also be expressed by the following identities: (I) ∀ω ∈ Ω, x . . . xω = x (E) ∀ω, φ ∈ Ω, with m...

Quotients of Boolean algebras and regular subalgebras

Let B,C be Boolean algebras and e : B → C an embedding. We examine the hierarchy of ideals on C for which e : B → C/I is a regular (i.e. complete) embedding. As an application we deal with the interrelationship between P(ω)/fin in the ground model and in its extension. If M is an extension of V containing a new subset of ω, then in M there is an almost disjoint re nement of the family ([ω]) . M...

On a Theorem of Van Mill

We fix an error in the proof of a theorem of Van Mill about homeomorphisms between compactifications of ω with small weight. Theorem 4.2. Let aω and bω be compactifications of ω. Assume that (1) there is a retraction r : aω → aω \ ω, (2) there is a retraction s : bω → bω \ ω, (3) f : aω \ ω → bω \ ω is a homeomorphism. If the weight of aω \ ω is less than p, then f can be extended to a homeomor...
